Culture Project is seeking proposals from women identified directors for our three upcoming Directors’ Weekends, October 6-7, 13-14 and 20-21.

Culture Project is proud to bring back the Women Center Stage Festival October 1st through October 31st, 2018.

The mission of Culture Project’s Women Center Stage (WCS) initiative is to support and vigorously promote the work of women identified artists, and to celebrate the unique contribution of women identified artists to social justice and human rights through the arts. The cornerstone of WCS, our Women Center Stage Festival, aims to be a dynamic and diverse laboratory for works in progress by women artists at all stages of their careers. The month-long festival provides a much- needed home for exploring new ideas and inspiration, testing out early stages of new work and putting women artists in conversation with new audiences, potential collaborators, future mentors and a vibrant community of peers.

This year’s director-driven pieces should use theatre in a unique way to address a pressing socio-political issue in your community or in our nation. We are particularly interested in seeing pieces that explore the issues of immigration, presidential impeachment, criminal justice reform and racism.

Some questions your work might consider in the development of your work:

  • What is theatre/arts unique intervention in today’s most pressing socio-political issues?
  • What can theatre do in times of political crisis?
  • How can theatre be used to inspire civic participation and political action?
  • How can theatre help imagine new alternatives?
  • Can theatre lay the groundwork for political change?

Work can be completely original, an interpretation of a classic, music based, dance-based, or anything in between. Special consideration will be given to theatre pieces that go beyond the four walls of traditional theatre spaces. Selected proposals will be presented in a festival format in Culture Project’s Women Center Stage Festival.

Women and trans/gender nonconforming directors of all experiences and backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Selected directors will receive $400 for their project in addition to tech time and performance space.

Please send a cover letter, resume and one-page proposal discussing your project including the issue it addresses and how you are tackling some of the questions above and your resume to Ashley Marinaccio at directorsweekendWCS@gmail.com. Please note any conflicts you might have with the following schedule in your cover letter. Submissions should be received no later than Saturday, September 8th at 5:00 pm.
