Counting Actors: March 2018 Statistics

The Counting Actors Project is managed by Bay Area actor Valerie Weak, and began in June 2011 on her own blog. Works by Women San Francisco began hosting the project in February 2014.  The archive of all past posts can be found here

MARCH 2018

March’s count includes 11 shows, bringing the total shows counted by the project to 1015 shows.

Here are the stats:

Playwrights = 17; 10 women and 7 men.

Directors = 14; 9 women and 5 men.

Union Actors = 13; 10 women and 3 men.

Non-Union Actors = 74; 41 women, 32 men, 1 trans/non-binary.

Total Actors = 87; 51 women, 35 men, 1 trans/non-binary; 13 Union and 74 Non Union; 84 Local and 3 Non-Local.

Note: the trans/non-binary category counts artists who self-identify with pronouns other than he/she such as they, zhe, hir etc.  Artists who use she/her pronouns are included in the ‘women’ group and those who use he/him pronouns are included in the ‘men’ group.

  • Kursk (Theatre Lunatico) Note: a play originally written for an all male cast, here changed to female
  • The Wolves (Marin Theatre Company)
  • It’s Only a Play (New Conservatory Theatre Center)

  • Red (Bread & Butter Theatre)
  • Judy Moody and Stink (Bay Area Children’s Theatre)
  • Woman in Mind (Town Hall Theatre Company)
  • Seeds (Utopia Theatre Project)
  • Compton’s Cafeteria Riot (Tenderloin Museum)
  • Between Us (Program B) (TheatreFirst) Note: an evening of 3 short solo plays.  4 writers for this project because one piece co-written and 3 directors.
  • Iron Shoes (Shotgun Players) Note: female director and female music director both counted here as director.  Female librettist and female composer/lyricist both counted as writer.  Music director and composer/lyricist are same person
