The 38th annual Bay Area Playwrights Festival performs for its second and final week Thursday 7/23 – Sunday 7/26 at Tides Theater (533 Sutter, San Francisco). In addition to staged readings of seven new plays, the festival also features a Theatre Bay Area Atlas Playwrights Showcase (Thur 7/23) and several workshops about new play production.
WWSF salutes Playwrights Foundation because more than 50% of the BAPF playwrights, directors and dramaturgs are women this year! Theater women working on BAPF 38 include:
Playwrights: Kara Lee Corthron (Welcome to Fear City), Christine Evans (Galilee), Lauren Gunderson (The Revolutionists), and Geetha Reddy whose play On a Wonderverse will have its premiere at Crowded Fire Theater next year.
Directors: Rebecca Novick (Galilee), Eleanor Holdridge (The Revolutionists), Jessica Heidt (On a Wonderverse), Christine Young (Read to Me), Jessa Brie Moreno (Hooded, or Being Black for Dummies)
Dramaturgs: Christina Novakov-Ritchey (Welcome to Fear City) Jayne Wenger (Galilee), Karen Altree Piemme (The Revolutionists and also BAPF 38 Producer), Laura Brueckner (On a Wonderverse), Lisa Marie Rollins (Hooded, or Being Black for Dummies), Sonia Fernandez (#julys).
Bay Area theater folks know that BAPF always features strong new plays, but this year’s crop is truly exceptional. Each and every one of the seven plays should absolutely have a Bay Area production. If you are a local actor, director, or producer, you should come check out the work and be an advocate for getting these plays produced here!
