Chinese Women use Theater to Push Back Against Pressure to Marry Young

“For young women in China who have ambitions beyond raising a family, life is a constant barrage of societal pressures to marry early – preferably by 25, by no means beyond 27.

In China’s capital over the last month, more than 15 women have gone onstage to share their true-life stories about being labeled “sheng nu” – a Chinese term that means “leftover women.” Dubbed “The Leftover Monologues,” the presentations proved surprisingly popular – and the cast is considering whether to continue now that the original plan of three performances is completed.”

10 Works By Female Playwrights You Don’t Want to Miss

“Playbill.com offers a look at some exciting new works by female playwrights that will be presented during the fall season.

Controversial topics like hate crimes against homosexuals, opportunities for immigrant workers and race relations will be explored in new plays this fall. While the subjects of these plays and musicals vary widely, they all possess one common trait: All of them are written by women.

Playbill.com has compiled a list of plays written by women that will be presented in New York throughout the fall season.”

The Killjoys and Why American Theater Needs Trans Playwrights

“A landslide majority of male playwrights are produced over female playwrights. While the numbers vary by region, Broadway is a known offender, with an outstanding low producing fewer than one in eight shows of a season with plays by women. While this argument has been going on visibly for more than a decade thanks to a report released by the New York State Council on the Arts in 2002, there are a lot of theater professionals still left on the sidelines: transgender artists.

In 2013, an L.A.-based group of playwrights and producers called The Kilroys formed with the mission to create positive solutions to the on-going issue of gender-inclusivity on American stages. This June, The Kilroys circulated a list of their 46 most recommended new female-authored plays to combat gender disparity in American professional theater.”
