Meetup #21: Queens for a Year

For our 21st Meetup, we returned to the annual Bay Area Playwrights Festival, produced by Playwrights Foundation to see Queens for a Year, written by T.D. Mitchell and directed by Jayne Wenger.

The play shows how four generations of military women tackle another kind of war, in the way only women of grit can do. Molly, a young Marine Corps officer, brings a low-ranking female Enlisted home with her on leave, to her family of multi-generational female veterans. What at first appears to be a post-deployment vacation is revealed to be a desperate escape from violence and bureaucracy in the Corps. Complicated by family history, Molly and Amanda’s story plays out against the Caenus/Caenaus myth, questioning the wisdom and morality of placing young women into traditionally misogynistic warrior culture.

  1. This was a stunning play–absolutely riveting, which is rare for a staged reading of a work in development. Kudos to writer T.D. Mitchell and director Jayne Wenger and to the outstanding acting ensemble (six women and one man).
