2014 Playwriting Competition

The Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation will accept submissions for its 2014 Playwriting Competition between March 1 and June 30, 2014. Electronic submissions must be received by midnight on June 30, and mailed manuscripts must be postmarked by the deadline.

All works submitted (full–length dramas, comedies, musicals, screenplays) must be original and in English. All works must concern LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender) life and must be based on, or directly inspired by, a historical person, culture, work of art or event.

There is no entry fee. Prizes are as follows: First Prize, $3,000; Second Prize, $1,500; Honorable Mentions, $500. Prizewinners will be announced before the end of the year.

In UK, theater is Much Less Sexist than Film

The Olivier Awards nominees were recently announced; if they are any indication, theater might just trump film in the which-is-less-sexist stakes. Three women directors have been nominated this year: “a first in the awards/ history. The nominees are all enormously worthy, but it was Lyndsey Turner (Chimerica), Maria Friedman (Merrily We Roll Along) and Susan Stroman (The Scottsboro Boys), snagging three out of the category’s four nominations that served as the proverbial cherry on the sundae. (Richard Eyre was also nominated for Ghosts)”, writes Megan Gibson.

Gibson elaborates: “Not that the theater industry is perfect — men have far more nominations and wins under their belts than women, certainly — but at least the theater has been making steady strides towards recognizing its female talent in recent years. Compare that progress to the film industry’s track record and things don’t look too good for Hollywood.”

Women in Theatre Magazine

“The 2014 International Magazine Edition is set to launch on June 2nd, 2014 and is supported in part by the Strelsin Foundation, Schwab Charitable Fund, and private donations.

This special edition focuses on innovative women theatre professionals who are creating and performing work that gives voice and substance to issues affecting women in different parts of the world. LPTW recognizes the need to increase awareness of the magnitude and impact of international theatre being created by women around the world. Women In Theatre is the first magazine of its kind to celebrate and connect theatre women across the world, and to offer an unparalleled opportunity for collaboration, recognition, and growth. This special international edition will coincide with the League’s second International Award given in the fall of 2014 to an exceptional woman theatre artist working outside the U.S. The magazine will feature profiles on the Awardee and 21 Nominees.

Plays by Women: One Theater’s Story

Rick Davis writes about the Theater of the First Amendment‘s “producing life as the resident professional company of the George Mason University” on Howround. Of their own involvement with gender equity, he writes: “I am in no position to recommend our matrix of season planning considerations to any of my erstwhile colleagues; they are still producing, we are not.  But I would like to suggest that without an explicit agenda, but by committing to artists over time, by trying to see our society and our theater whole, by being sincerely curious about and open to the best work, it is possible to succeed in balance without really trying.”

L.A. Women’s Theatre Festival marks 21 years – Part II

The L.A. Women’s Theatre Festival is celebrating 21 years of success this year. The Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival was founded by Executive Producer Adilah Barnes and Miriam Reed. The Festival is an annual event unique among American cultural institutions. Here’s their list of the performances scheduled for Mar 29-30.

In a nice park, on a nice street, two nice New England couples try very, very hard to be nice to each other as the Global Financial Crisis comes to town.  The first Bay Area production by playwright Amelia Roper, She Rode Horses Like the Stock Exchange is an absurdly funny, poignant and terrifying look at upper-crust America.  Hold on to your hors d’oeuvres, ladies and gentlemen – things just got messy.

Collected Stories

Ruth Steiner, a Columbia University professor and celebrated New York author. Lisa Morrison, her student; a bright-eyed young protégé turned confidante. Set in Ruth’s Greenwich Village Apartment, Ruth and Lisa lead us on a six year journey as their relationship shifts and changes and we must question our ideas about art, how it’s made and who owns it.  As their relationship evolves and the line between fact and fiction starts to blur, their fascinating story comes to an explosive conclusion.

COLLECTED STORIES is a two-hander, featuring two strong female characters played by Diana Brown and Kat Kneisel.  Diana Brown isco-producing and she created the concept for the stage design.
