Big Ten promoting female playwrights

The Big Ten Conference universities have come together to create a commission program to support female playwrights and provide female theater students and professional actors with strong roles. 

Beginning this spring, the Big Ten Theatre Consortium — a group of theater department chairs at Big Ten Conference universities — will launch its New Play initiate to commission, produce and publicize a series of new plays by female playwrights that are expected to have a number of strong female roles for women in their teens to early 30s.

Women playwrights sought for FemNoire in MA

Image Theater is seeking short plays and monologues, written by women for FemNoire 2014: A Festival of Women Playwrights. The fest takes place on March 28-29 in the Parker Gallery at the Whistler House Museum of Art.

Submit a Word or PDF file of your script to imagetheater@comcast.net. Put “2014 FemNoire Submission” in subject line and include contact info on the script.

Deadline for submissions is Jan. 30.

SNL casts first female black comic in 6 years

Sasheer Zamata, an alum of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater and an online comic, will join the cast of “Saturday Night Live” on Jan. 18, NBC announced Monday.

Zamata, who has made a name for herself with shorts like “Pursuit of Sexiness,” has been rumored to be joining “SNL” since last year when the show began a search to add the first black women to its cast since Maya Rudolph departed in 2007.

One Minute Play Festival in NYC

The One-Minute Play Festival and New Georges have created a dynamic partnership for the 1st George Sand Invitational One-minute Play Festival with part of the proceeds to benefit New Georges’ indispensable workspace for women theater artists: The Room.

The 1st George Sand Invitational One-minute Play Festival will be presented on Monday, January 13, and Tuesday, January 14, both at 8pm at INTAR Theatre in NYC. The performance on Tuesday, January 14 at 8pm will be livestreamed on Howlround.com‘s HowlroundTV at livestream.com/newplay.

  1. It’s very exciting to hear about the first one-minute play festival entirely written and directed by women, about to open in NYC. Also noteworthy, the one-minute play festival in San Francisco last month achieved gender parity across the board (writers, directors, actors, production team)–that conclusion is based on my count of names in the program.
